Need help teaching your child to ride a bike? Sign them up for a Balance & Pedal class with the Wisconsin Bike Fed's Safe Routes Instructors.  We have taught 100s of kids in Milwaukee Public Schools to ride for the first time. Our new Balance & Pedal program is your opportunity for your child to receive the same support in riding on two wheels!

Location: Wheel & Sprocket Bay View 187 E. Becher Street. Access parking lot on Becher.

The Wisconsin Bike Fed's Balance & Pedal Program is intended to teach kids to ride a bike for the first time. Many kids struggle finding their balance on two wheels. This process of teaching them is tough for both kids and their parents.  Over two 2-hour sessions, the Wisconsin Bike Fed's expert Safe Routes Instructors will work to get your kids pedaling all on their own. Think of this program as a "learn to ride bicycle rodeo."

This program takes place over two days, Friday June 16 & Saturday June 17, 2023, you can sign up for either the set of 9-11 AM sessions or the 1-3 PM sessions. This program is considered "drop-in" so if you are not available the entire 2 hours each day, simply bring your child for some practice anytime during the time slot you signed up for. The class takes place at the Wheel & Sprocket in Bay View 187 E. Becher Street.  Some kids may start rolling after the first session and will not need to return the second day.

While Joyride Cafe does not open until 11 AM guardians enrolling children in the 9-11 AM session are welcome to stay and enjoy the outdoor patio and wi-fi while their child is practicing; we will have coffee brewed for you to enjoy. For the 1-3 PM session, Joyride will have its full menu available to you.

We will have balance bikes and a few other small children's bicycles available for your child to borrow, but we recommend also bringing whatever bike your child is currently using.  We use the balance bike method of teaching kids to ride a bike, never training wheels. A Google Form will be sent out the week prior to the program in order to get more information about your child's needs.

Key skills: Balance, Awareness, Pedal Position, Looking Forward, Starting and Stopping, & Interacting with other kids on a bike.
